Do Unto Others: Kindness Sermon | Rev. Amy Beth Coleman

Passage: Micah 6:6-8

The Golden Rule, also called an ethics of reciprocity, is about treating others the way you want to be treated by others. The gospel of Matthew, chapters 5, 6 and 7, describes Jesus teaching in words that have come to be known as Sermon on the Mount. In part of that teaching, Matthew 7.12, Jesus says, “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Eugene Peterson’s translation The Message puts it this way: “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God’s Law and Prophets and this is what you get.” In the second week of our sermon series, “Do Unto Others,” we explore together these questions: What does it mean that the Golden Rule sums up the Law and the Prophets? What does the Lord require from us in our behavior? Do other religions have a Golden Rule? What did John Wesley have to say about how we treat others? Did John Wesley have other rules besides the Golden Rule? Also you will hear an update about my Braver Angels conversation this week.
